Mick Flagger is back and has made a dramatic discovery regarding the significance of... the throw-in. The logistics, legalities, and limitations of the throw-in are defined and described in Law 15. What is not addressed is the "big picture" significance of any single throw-in. Per Law 15, "A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw-in." In reality, most players also can't throw the ball even into the vicinity of the goal, rendering the action much more practical than advantageous (particularly the closer to midfield the throw-in is awarded). Anecdotal evidence suggests that, depending on the competition level, upwards of 50% of all throw-ins actually result in the abrupt loss of possession. Many even result in an opponent's quick counter-attack. Coaches have been known to bemoan winning a throw-in, instead, preferring to cede temporary possession to the opponent outside the touchline to increase the liklihood of winning possession on the pitch... where it actually matters. In short, if you're player, coach, or spectator and are upset about a botched throw-in call, you should probably "settle down, Beavis."

PS... The ball is in play until there is space between the vertical plane of the ball (not the bottom of the ball) and the vertical plane of the line. It's pretty difficult to make that call if you're not the AR.
